Stephen D. Jones, 79

Montevarchi, Italy — Stephen Decatur Jones of Marblehead, Massachusetts; Machiasport Maine and Loro Ciuffena, Italy, died on December 5, 2012. The cause of death was an aneurism. He was 79 years old.

Born on May 9, 1933, in Malden, Massachusetts, Steve was the devoted son of Charles B. and Esther Jones, and loving brother to Pamelia. He attended Mount Hermon School and Amherst College, where he played football and lacrosse. He was an Eagle Scout and a U.S. Army veteran. In 1953 he started his own insulation company and ran it until his retirement in 2003. He was a longtime member of the Danvers Rotary Club and a former deacon of the Kensington Congregational Church in New Hampshire.

Steve embraced life. An avid aviator, he owned and flew planes for 50 years and shared that love with his children. When not aloft, you could find him puttering in his gardens, tinkering with the various vehicles he owned, cycling (he rode his bike throughout Europe and the United States), listening to misic (from bluegrass to opera), delving into history or enjoying art and lectures. He also appreciated a good meal and a fine glass of wine. Yet, despite his cultivated tastes, Steve was a man of the earth. He liked nothing better than mucking around the shoreline of his property in Machiasport, where his family goes back generations. A recent sighting of a massive beaver at a pond near his home there was as exciting as any visit to a European capital. Steve was also a quiet but committed philanthropist, who cared deeply about the welfare those less fortunate than he and about the stewardship of land. Generous and compassionate, he took care of things. But he also had a wry sense of humor, and you'd have to listen closely to catch many of his quips and asides, which were often delivered sotto voce. Above all, Steve loved his family and spending time with them wherever he roamed.

Steve was predeceased by his parents and sister. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Christie-Ann (Jannell) Jones, as well as his eight children: Andrea Katcher of Newburyport, Massachusetts; Jeffrey P. Jones of Brentwood, New Hampshire; Stephen D. Jones Jr. of Raleigh, North Carolina; Kimberly Kalkus of Lawrenceville, New Jersey; Eric F. Jones of Buxton, Maine; Reid L. C. Jones of Machiasport, Maine; Ian C. Jones of Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida; Graeme A. Jones of Marblehead, Massachusetts; and his 10 grandchildren.
