Marblehead — Rufus Cutler Cushman Jr., “Sandy,” age 79, of Marblehead, passed away on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013, in his home after a battle with cancer. He was the son of Rufus and Elizabeth Cushman of Brookline and Marblehead.
Sandy was a graduate of the Loomis School in Windsor, CT, and went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he met his loving wife of 55 years, Joan Cushman. He had a long and prosperous career of 27 years at Fidelity Investments beginning as a Portfolio Manager. During his time at Fidelity he also ran the Bond Department and Personal Trust Group before retiring in 1998. He served as a Trustee of both the Loomis Chaffee School and Proctor Academy of Andover, NH. He was President of the Gut 'n Feathers Club of Marblehead and The Miles River Marsh Rats of Manchester, MA.
Sandy will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, wonderful father, a special grandfather and a respected and loyal friend. Sandy enjoyed traveling with his wife Joan and his family sharing in his love of the beauty of the world. He was an accomplished soccer, baseball, hockey, tennis and badminton player. An avid outdoorsman, his passions included fishing, hunting and skeet shooting. He has made us laugh with his wonderful wry sense of humor, secured the future of his family and went out of his way to help others without any thought of attention to his kind deeds. He was a principled man who gave his best no matter the task, lived life well, and made all around him better for having known him.
Sandy is survived by his wife Joan Sprecher Cushman, son Thomas Cushman, daughter-in-law Louise Ann Cushman and three grandchildren, Zoe, Max and Ian Cushman, all of Marblehead, MA. His daughter Karen Lee Cushman passed away of diabetes in 1993.
