Joann L. Berry, 84


Salem — Joann L. (Gibbs) Berry, 84, wife to the late William H. Berry Jr., with whom she shared 60 years of marriage, died on Friday, February 7, 2014, at the John Bertram House in Salem, after an extended series of health problems.

Born in Beverly to the late Erbert and Addie Gibbs, she was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1947. After high school, she worked for the John Hancock Insurance Co. until she married Bill, and became a homemaker and a loving mother to two sons. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she volunteered her time for many events and activities.

Throughout the years, she enjoyed many creative passions, including drawing, photography and painting. She loved working in her many flower gardens alongside her husband. She also spent her time reading about U.S. history and engaging in politics, campaigning for many local politicians. One of her favorite hobbies in her later years was studying her family’s genealogy, going so far as to travel to libraries, cemeteries and city halls for information. Most of all, she loved being a grandmother to her three grandchildren.

Surviving her is one son, Richard G. Berry and his wife, Patricia, of Salem; three grandchildren, Joey, Emma and Danny; a brother, Donald Gibbs and his wife, Linnea, of St. Louis; a brother-in-law, Gordon Estes of Beverly Farms; and many nieces and nephews. Joann was also the mother of the late David W. Berry, aunt to the late Garry Gibbs, sister to the late Robert Gibbs, and sister-in-law to the late Frank and Fran Goodhue and Edith Estes.

ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held in the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, North Beverly, on Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
