Ayer — Ruth E. (Stevens) Sparkes, 83, of Ayer, formerly of Salem, died on Monday, January 20, 2014, at Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley, Littleton.
Her husband, Bradley W. Sparkes, died in August 1995.
Mrs. Sparkes was born in Salem on July 5, 1930, one of four children born to Harold and Beatrice V. (Russell) Stevens. She was a 1947 graduate of Salem High School. Following her graduation from high school, Mrs. Sparkes worked at the C.F. Tompkins Furniture Co. in Salem.
In 1953, she married her husband, then Sgt. Bradley W. Sparkes. As a result of his career in the U.S. Army, she and her family resided in Warrenton, Va., and the Philippines, before finally moving to Fort Devens, and settling in Ayer.
She leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, David C. and Terri Sparkes of Hudson, and Stephen B. and Michelle Sparkes of Ashby; a daughter, Janet E. Grocer of Ashland; and two grandchildren, Dylan Grocer and Jessica Grocer.
She was predeceased by two children, Suzanne H. Sparkes in 1992, and William A. Sparkes in 1993. She was the sister of the late Albert Stevens and Elizabeth Haley, both of Salem; and Russell Stevens of Danvers.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, January 25, at Federated Church of Ayer, 21 Washington St., Ayer. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday, January 24, at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Rd., Route 2A, Ayer.
