Nordia L. (Prietz) Kay, 85

Peabody — Nordia Leah (Prietz) Kay, 85, of Peabody, formerly of Marblehead, entered into rest on Tuesday morning, on January 21, 2014, at the Braeburn Gardens at Brooksby Village in Peabody. She was the beloved wife of Emanuel Kay. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Betty (Chekmer) Prietz. She attended the High School of Music & Art, and graduated from Queens College, where she majored in art studies. Nordia received a master’s degree in art education from Columbia University.

Mrs. Kay had been employed as an occupational aide at Marlborough State Hospital in New Jersey, and an art supervisor for the Bridgeville, Pa., school system. Nordia had also taught watercolor classes at the North Shore Jewish Community Center for 40 years.

In addition to her husband, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage, she is survived by two devoted children, Carl Kay and his wife, Yoko, of Cambridge and Japan, and Laurie Mallas and her husband, Thomas, of Swampscott; her sister, Adina Linden and her husband, Allen, of Durham, N.H.; four cherished grandchildren, Marissa and William Mallas, and Wataru and Eriko Kay; and many nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, Salem, on Friday, January 24, at 10 a.m. Interment will be held privately. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday evening, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., in the Catering Room at the MacIntosh Clubhouse, 200 Brooksby Village Dr., Peabody. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Brooksby Resident Care Fund, c/o Resident Life, 200 Brooksby Village Dr., Peabody, MA 01960.

    Beverly — Antoinette “Ann” (Stelline) Mazzetta, 99, of Beverly and formerly of Wenham, beloved wife of the late Agostino Mazzetta, died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Essex Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Beverly. Born in Italy, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Maria ( DiProfio) Stelline. She was educated in Hamilton Schools. Ann was a very good cook, who always looked forward to her family Sunday dinners, Sundays were devoted to family. Antoinette took great pride of her home and raising her family.

  • Donald Robert Humphreys, 91

    Marblehead — Donald Robert Humphreys was born in Swampscott, Mass. on March 20, 1923, to Francis Henry Humphreys and Ethel Louise ( Berry ) Humphreys. Don, as he was called, graduated with the Swampscott High School, Class of 1940. On Dec. 8, 1941, one day after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Don signed up for the U.S. Marine Corps. He reported for duty in January, was trained as an aircraft mechanic, and was sent to the South Pacific Theater, spending six months on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands before moving to other tactical assignments. He returned to the states in May, 1944, as a Master Sargent, and married Ruth Treat of Marblehead, and began their married life together at the Marine Air Station, El Toro, Calif. Don was transferred to Navy Flight Training in January, 1945, and had just earned his pilots wings when the war ended.

    Danvers — Esther Rose (Graff) Saltzman, age 101, of Danvers, formerly of Peabody, entered into rest on April 18, 2014. Daughter of the late Zalman and Sarah (Wolk) Graff. Devoted mother of Joann Ivry and her husband Alfred of Salisbury, Conn. Loving Sister of Marion Bak of Windsor, Conn., and the late Meyer, Morris, Harry and Elliot Graff. Also survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

  • A. Bruce Chuber, 91

    San Antonio, Texas — Bruce Chuber, of San Antonio, decorated World War II veteran, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. He was 91 years old. Born on September 25, 1922, in New York City, New York, he was the son of Florence Horman Chuber and August Chuber. He is survived by his sister, Carol Chuber Sacca; brother, Dr. Stewart Chuber; cousins, Frank Chuber and Helen Strnad; his wife, Gunhild Detto Chuber; daughter, Claudia Chuber; son, Eric Bruce Chuber; daughter-in-law, Michelle Sanders Chuber; grandchildren, Sebastian Ortega-Chuber, Camila McLaughlin, Bruce Chuber and Olivia Chuber. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. After attending Queens College he joined the war effort in the Pacific Theatre where he flew missions as navigator and radio specialist until the end of World War II. When he returned as a decorated soldier, he began his love for flying and became an outstanding pilot for the rest of his life. Flying was his passion, always owning a plane, treating it as one of his best friends. He was a member of the Octogenarian Flying Group and flew professional photography flights with his friend, Rigo Guerrero, until 2013. He joined Cessna Aircraft as international sales representative and years later worked for Aero Commander, Piper Aircraft and Fairchild as an International Marketing Director. His duties took him around the world, piloting all over Mexico, Central and South America, Africa and Western Europe. His work also took him to India, Japan and China. In addition to his passion for flying, he was an avid sportsman and excelled in boating, motorcycling, fishing, hunting, swimming and skiing; but his love for his family and friends is what truly distinguished the life of this good man.

    Danvers — Kevin Jones of Danvers, MA and formerly of Marblehead, was born on the 5th day of the 5th month of 1950, and always considered five his lucky number. Kevin was raised in Marblehead and attended the Devereux School and the Star of the Sea Grammar School. He was a graduate of Bishop Fenwick High School and the University of Massachusetts. He also studied at North Shore Community College, Bentley College, and Boston State College. Kevin’s graduate studies were at the University of Southern California. Kevin was certified as a teacher, principal, Notary Public, Bail Commissioner and Justice of the Peace. Kevin was at his best helping others, and found his 32-year career as Assistant Clerk Magistrate of Courts in the Superior Court of Essex County very rewarding. As a boy, Kevin first honed his aquatic skills at Devereux beach and was later rumored to be one of the Atlantic’s most celebrated body surfers. He was a lover of numbers, Boston Globe journalism, fried clams, holiday cartography, and was the North Shore’s premier clam chowder culinarian.

The fourth of six siblings, he graduated from Dorchester High School For Boys and attended Boston University. Serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., San Diego, and Honolulu, and worked on the staff of The Leatherneck Magazine.

    Manchester, MA — Robert A. Jermain, a longtime resident of Manchester, Mass., passed away recently at the age of 89. Bob trained as a naval aviator during WWII, and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in chemical engineering. He later earned a master's degree in business from Boston University. He was a chemical engineer by trade, and after working for several large firms, he started and managed his own business, Applied Technology, as a manufacturer’s rep for scientific equipment. Later in life, he taught science and mathematics at the North Shore Community College. He was an avid tennis player, sailor and musician, and had a wide variety of other interests, including all things mechanical and electrical engineering-related, home restoration and boat building.
