Hamilton — Gertrude Sprague, 95, of Hamilton, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Hathorne Hill Genesis Health Care in Danvers. Born in Hamilton on November 28, 1918, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Ethel ( Adams ) Sprague. She was raised and educated in Hamilton and a graduate of Hamilton High School, Class of 1936. Gertrude went to Hawthorne Business School in Salem. She worked for over 40 years for the New England Telephone Co., until she retired in 1983. Gertrude served her country in the United States Marine Corps in WWII as a Master Sergeant. After her discharge, she joined the Marine Reserves until she retired. In 1960, Gertrude became a member of the Woman’s Marine Association, where she served in many positions. For many years, she repaired and dressed dolls for the Toys For Tots organization. She resided in Venice, Fla., for 25 years, returning to Hamilton in 2006. She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church of Hamilton. Gertrude loved to travel and enjoyed hand crafts.
She is survived by her two sisters, Edna Barney of Hamilton, and Emeline Liacos of Danvers; a sister-in-law, Frankie Sprague of Florida; a special niece, who cared for her these past few years, Ann Barney of Hamilton; eight nieces and nephews; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews; and seven great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and several cousins. Gertrude was predeceased by her brother, George H. Sprague Jr.; and a nephew, James M. Barney.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Hamilton, 624 Bay Road, on Tuesday, July 8, at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A visiting hour will be held prior to the service at the church, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery.
