Wenham — Laura M. (Phelps) Durkee 88, of Danvers, formerly of Wenham, wife of the late Norman R. Durkee, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Emeritus Assisted Living in Danvers.
Born in Santa Paula, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Carter and Inez (Durbin) Phelps. She was raised and educated in Santa Paula, and at the time of her marriage in 1946, Laura and her husband settled in Danvers before moving to Wenham where they had resided for many years.
Mrs. Durkee had been employed for 35 years as a sales clerk at the Macy’s Department Store at the North Shore Mall in Peabody, until the time of her retirement.
She was a longtime, faithful member of the First Church in Wenham where she sang in the choir for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Couples Club, and enjoyed music and dancing. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who will be missed by all who knew her.
Surviving her are two daughters, Karen Clarke and her husband, Michael, of New Hampshire, and Nancy Needham and her companion, Frank Sholds of Manchester-by-the-Sea; two sons, Steven Durkee and his wife, Carol of Florida, and Jeffrey Durkee and his wife, Jamie, of Georgia; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and her dear, longtime friend, Peg LeBlanc of Salem.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Wenham, on Sunday, July 13, at 12 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
