IPSWICH — William, “Bill” Melville Hughes, 69, husband of Susan Bailey of Bayview Road, Ipswich, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.
Born in Salem August 13, 1943, he was the son of the late Gordon S. and Phyllis (Powers) Hughes, formerly of Ipswich and Boca Raton, FL. Mr. Hughes attended the Ipswich public school system and was a graduate member of the Ipswich High School Class of 1961 where he was a student leader and valedictorian. He graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1965 with a major in Economics and received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Chicago in 1967 with a major in Finance. Following graduation in 1967, Bill joined the Chicago investment counsel firm of Stein Roe & Farnham as an equities analyst. He returned to Ipswich in 1998, working in the Boston office retiring in 2005. He was a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and served in the Illinois National Guard from 1967 to his honorable discharge in 1972.
All who knew Bill or met him for even a brief time, would agree he was above all else, “a true gentleman.” He welcomed his many friends and family members to his Great Neck home with warmth and generosity. He was a member of First Church in Ipswich; special interests included boating, fishing, skiing, and gardening. Throughout his life, Bill met every challenge with a positive attitude, courage and a sense of humor.
In addition to his wife Susan, he will be deeply missed by his beloved son Todd G. Hughes and his wife Amy J. of Franklin; his three daughters, Rebecca Sobolewski and her husband Matthew of Burlington, Vanessa Bridson and her husband Eric of Hanover, Holly Hughes of Beverly; two stepsons Gregory Amazeen and Bradley Amazeen and his wife Pamela Clancy all of Ipswich; nine grandchildren, Rachael, Audrey, and Gabrielle Sobolewski, Jack Hughes, Avery and Aria Bridson, Bailey, Reagan and Abbie Amazeen; his brother Steven Hughes and his wife Donna of Ipswich and his former wife, Annmarie Hughes of Ipswich.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held 10 am Thursday, December 6, 2012, at the First Church in Ipswich, followed by interment in the Highland Cemetery, Ipswich. Visiting hours are Wednesday, 5 to 7 pm, in the Whittier-Porter Funeral home, 6 High St., Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.
