Marblehead, MA — Susan Graves Howes, age 81, wife of the late Samuel Shattuck Howes, died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the Lafayette Nursing Home, following a long illness.
Born in New York, N.Y., the daughter of the late United States Coast Guard Captain Garrett V.A. and Suzanne (Gillespie) Graves, she was raised in New York and attended Alexandria, Va. elementary schools. During her high school years, she was honored to be published on the cover of Life Magazine while a student at Winchester (MA) High School. She enjoyed spending her summer vacations from school in Grand Isle, Vt. for years.
Following her graduation from Winchester High School, Mrs. Howes attended the University of Vermont and married her first husband, Peter Gray.
After her children’s education was completed she returned to school, and received her Associate degree in Library Science. She then became a librarian in Nashua, N.H. until her retirement. In addition to her family activities, she was a longtime loving dog owner throughout her life.
Susan is survived by her daughters, Lisa Gray Duffy and her husband, Jim of Salem, Pamela Gray of Haverhill; a brother, Garrett Graves and his wife, Roxanne of Vermont; and her four grandchildren, Margaret, Tom, Suzannah and Peter.
