Gloucester — Robert Francis Jarvis, 84, of Gloucester, MA, died on January 24, 2014, of a brief illness at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by loving family. He was the husband of Marcia (Kauppinen) Jarvis, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage.
Robert was born in Gloucester, MA, on December 30, 1929. He was the son of the late Flora (MacDonald) Jarvis and Harold Jarvis. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1948, where he was active in the JROTC. After high school, he served as a Merchant Marine and also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He attended Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, Class of 1953, where he played football and was inducted into its Hall of Fame. He was also a graduate of Suffolk Law School.
For over 40 years, Robert worked as an attorney for the Massachusetts State Auditor’s Office. He took great pride in his Catholic faith and cherished attending Mass daily. He was an avid football fan and loved watching a Sunday afternoon game. In his later years, he delighted in spending time with his family and adored watching his three grandchildren grow.
Robert is survived by his wife, Marcia Jarvis; his six children, Erin (Jarvis) Frates and her husband, Chris; Thomas A. Jarvis; Michael A. Jarvis and his companion, Krista Ellis; Matthew C. Jarvis and his fiancée, Alyssa Douglass; Jessica M. Jarvis McHale and her husband, Jay; and Patrick J. Jarvis and his wife, Kate; as well as his brother, Donald Jarvis; his sister, Elizabeth Halliseys; his three grandchildren, Ryan, John and Megan Frates; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Murphy and brothers, Harold Jarvis, Lawrence Gillis, and Allen Gillis.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Tuesday, January 28, at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
