Manchester-by-the-Sea — May Calnek (Mary Elizabeth Edgecomb), October 6, 1922 to January 25, 2014, was the daughter of Mary and Mark Lodge Edgecomb. She was predeceased by her artist husband, Louis H. Calnek and sisters, Florence and Margie, all originally of Manchester. May is survived by her daughter, Lotte Calnek and grandson, Bennett Sterling, also of Manchester; sister, Shirley Hopkins of Virginia and sister-in-law, Patricia McLeod, Brooksby Village.
Born and raised in Manchester, May graduated from Story High School in 1940. Receiving her RN at Children’s Hospital, Boston, May then studied anesthesia and worked as a nurse-anesthetist throughout World War II. May and Lou married in 1948 and moved to Manhattan and then to Croton-on-Hudson, New York, where they rebuilt a summer cottage-stable into the home of their dreams and lived for 48 years.
In mid-life, after staying home to raise her daughter, May returned to college and received her Masters in Education, upon which she taught health in the Yorktown, New York public school system. Her final career was as a night supervisor of a large detox hospital unit for the Westchester County Hospital complex in Purchase, New York. May and Lou returned to live in their hometown of Manchester in 1997 to be near their daughter and grandson.
May’s greatest loves were her family, reading, and conversing. Her keen intelligence, evident in all she chose to do, was coupled with her warm and caring presence.
ARRANGEMENTS: A celebration of May’s life will be held at a later time. Memorial donations may be sent to Care Dimensions (formerly Hospice of The North Shore), 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B102, Danvers, MA 01923.
