Amesbury, MA — Jo-Ann Mary (Vassil) Bertone, 63, of Amesbury, died on Wednesday morning, February 12, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Born in Salem, Mass., on June 24, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Leftari and Alice (Theriault) Vassil. She was a graduate of Salem High School.
Jo-Ann dedicated herself to helping others, and had worked as a nurses’ aid at Port Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Newburyport. Her choice for that nursing home was that her own mother, Alice, was there as a resident in the Alzheimer’s Unit, and it allowed her to care for her mother in the surroundings she needed. Jo-Ann had also worked 20 years at Osram Sylvania.
Jo-Ann was passionate about animals, loved the beach, and relaxing at the pool, enjoyed shopping as much as browsing, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends. They were the center of her universe.
Her survivors include her daughter, Lisa M. Bertone of Amesbury; her grandson, who held the key to her heart, Coty M. VanScyoc of Woundsville, W.V.; her companion of 24, Ron Thompson of Amesbury; along with many dear friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, will be Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m., immediately followed by memorial services at 4 p.m. Interment will be private for the family.
Kindly omit flowers, instead, to honor her lifelong devotion to animals, donations in her memory may be made to the MSPCA, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
