Swampscott — Sophia (Gianni) Hashem, age 92, wife of the late George A. Hashem, formerly of Calabrese St., Salem, died on Tuesday, Sepember 24, 2013, at the Bertram House of Swampscott surrounded by her children.
Born in Haverhill, the daughter of the late Vincent and Lena (Bova) Gianni, she was raised by her mom and stepfather, Frank Gianni, following her dad’s unexpected death. Raised in Lynn’s “Brickyard” section, she was known as the “junior mother” at home helping with her younger siblings. Following her attendance at Lynn Classical High School, she worked in the local shoe shops.
At the outbreak of World War II, Mrs. Hashem changed jobs to work at General Electric and support the War effort. Following the war she was “set up” on a blind date, and met her late husband and married. A devoted stay at home mom, she enjoyed gardening, needlepoint and baking for the family. She also enjoyed day trips to Salem Willows with family and occasional trips to Boston but most of all loved to dote on her grandchildren.
Mrs. Hashem is survived by two children, John Hashem and his wife, Suzanne, of Groveland and retired City of Lynn Librarian, Nadine Mitchell of Lynn; a brother, James Gianni of Peabody; two sisters, Rose "Dolly" Keefe of Lynnfield and Catherine “Kitty” Grant of Lynnfield and Nina Gianni of Maine; three grandchildren, Kathleen Hashem of Salem, Anthony Hashem of Groveland and Jason Hashem and his wife, Sarah, of Haverhill and two great-grandchildren, Nadia and Nicholas.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Nero Gianni.
