NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Brother Xavier F. MacEachern, O.Carm, 82, of the Order of Carmelites, died on Friday, July 31, 2010 at St. Patrick's Residence in Naperville, Ill., following a short illness.
He was born Francis Xavier MacEachern in Dorchester on July 1, 1928, the son of the late James and Catherine (Macisaac) MacEachern, and was raised there, graduating from Memorial High School in Roxbury. In 1952, he entered the Carmelite novitiate and made his vows in 1953, taking the religious name "Xavier." He made his solemn vows in Hamilton in 1956.
He was first assigned to Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and in 1960, he returned to the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton, where he was stationed for the next 10 years. In 1971, he moved to Our Lady of Scapular Prior in Peabody and served on the staff of St. Therese Chapel at the Northshore Mall in Peabody for 23 years. In 1993, Brother Xavier joined several of his Carmelite brothers at Carmelite Carefree Village in Darien, Ill., where he lived in retirement.
He is survived by two brothers and sister-in-laws, Allan and Barbara MacEachern of Brockton, and James and Mary MacEachern of Braintree; and many nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Scapular Priory, 4 Wheatland St., Peabody. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Discalced Carmelite Monastery, 15 Mount Carmel Road, Danvers, with the Rev. Leonard Gilman, O.Carm, Commissary Provincial for the Eastern Region as the main celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
