Madeline F. Abbott, 74


Ipswich — Madeline F. (Carey) Abbott, 74, wife of Brian O. Abbott of Mayfair Court, Ipswich, died Saturday, August 3, 2013, in Lahey Medical Center, Burlington, following a brief illness.

Born in Ipswich on January 15, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Arthur T. and Simonne M.M. (Porter) Carey. She was raised in Ipswich, and was a 1956 graduate of the former Whipple High School. As a young woman, she went to work as a payroll clerk for New England Telephone Co. in Salem, going on to work in the Boston office as a payroll supervisor. During many of these years, she traveled between the Boston and New York offices. She retired in 1991 after more than 32 years of service.

Married in 1977, the Abbotts made their home and raised their family on Kingfisher Road, and later on outer Linebrook Road, Ipswich.

For many years, she and her husband wintered in Naples, Fla. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, crossword puzzles, knitting for family and friends, and the Red Sox.

She was a member of the N.E. Telephone Pioneers Club, was lifelong communicant of St. Joseph’s Parish Our Lady of Hope Church, and was very active with her husband in his Lion’s Club membership.

In addition to her husband, Brian, of 36 years, she is survived by two daughters, Beth A. Malone and her husband, Timothy J., of Beverly, and Kimberley D. Abbott of Peabody; two grandchildren, Matthew T. and Corey M. Malone, both of Beverly; four sisters, Sheila Baldinelli and her husband, Ronald, Carol McCarthy, Janie Howard, Marcia Greenough and her husband, James, all of Ipswich; and many nephews and nieces.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m., from the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich, followed by the celebration of a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., in Our Lady of Hope Church, Linebrook Rd., Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Interment will be in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Visiting hours are Tuesday, 4 to 8 pm.
