Peabody — Dr. Murray A. Leavitt, 79, of Peabody, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, June 21. He was the only son of the late Benjamin and Anna (Glazier) Leavitt of Bangor, Maine.
Dr. Leavitt was born on January 11, 1934, in Bangor, where he received his early education. He graduated from the University of Maine Orono, and Tufts Medical School in 1961. He interned at Maine Medical Center, did residency at Boston VA Medical Center (internal medicine) and Boston City Hospital (cardiovascular diseases), and also fellowshipped at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Leavitt practiced internal medicine and cardiology for over 45 years.
Dr. Leavitt retired from practice in 2008, but continued to maintain his medical license and volunteer as the chief surgeon for the Aleppo Shrine Medical Unit. “Doc” Leavitt was a key participant in the Aleppo Shriners parades and circus. He had an extensive Masonic career. He was a member of Jordan Masonic Lodge of Peabody, where he attended regularly, and St. Andrews Lodge of Bangor. He also received a 50-year Veteran Medal from both the Grand Lodge of Maine and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. He was a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Salem and Boston Consistory. Further, he was a charter member of the Northshore Mall Masonic Club, where he was a constant light and will be sorely missed.
Dr. Leavitt leaves a cousin, Dr. Harvey Leavitt of Needham; his many Masonic Brothers and Shriners; and many friends and former patients.
Remembrances can be made as donations to the Jordan Masonic Lodge, 71 Wallis St., Peabody, Mass., in the name of Dr. Murray A. Leavitt.
ARRANGEMENTS: Dr. Leavitt was returned to Bangor on Friday, June 28, where burial took place in Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery with the traditional Jewish service officiated by Rabbi Justin Goldstein and the congregation. Full Masonic honors were performed by St. Andrews Lodge, Wor. Glenn Mower, Master, and the Grand Lodges from both Maine and Massachusetts.
