Graciosa, Azores — After a lengthy illness, Arcelina Augusta Cunha, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in her beloved island of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal. She moved to Peabody with her family in 1973. Upon her retirement in 1992, she and her husband, the late Valquerio, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage, returned to Graciosa. Among the many things she enjoyed was gardening and spending time with her family and friends. While living in Peabody she was involved with the Portuguese church, Our Lady of Fatima, and and helped raise money for the Portuguese children's dance group, Grupo Etnografico Portugal dos Pequeninos. She is survived by her six children, Manuel Cunha and his wife, Maria C. Branquinho, Maria Machado and her husband, Duarte Machado, Gabriel Cunha, Diana Cunha Rossi, Conceicao Cunha, and Jose Luis Cunha and his wife, Jeannie Pereira Cunha. Mrs. Cunha was the beloved grandmother of 15 grandchildren, Anita and Tania Machado, Christina Furtado, Angel Cunha, Doris Claffey, Ryan Fanning, Kayla Tierney, Adriana Cunha, Jonathan and Ashley Champa, Nicholas and Ciara Rossi, Mathew, Adam and Eric Cunha. She was also the great-grandmother of Jocelyn and Isaiah Furtado. She is also survived by her sisters, Gloria Cunha, Teresa Lurdes Silva and her husband, Albertino Silva, Conceicao Bettencourt and her husband, Balbino Bettencourt; and two brothers, Antonio Espinola dos Anjos and his wife, Alzira Maria dos Anjos, and Joao Espinola Jr.; and a sister-in-law, Maria Bettencourt and her husband, Manuel Bettencourt; and many nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Burial took place in Graciosa, Azores, and a memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, January 25, at 5 p.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody, Mass.
