HAMILTON — Robert W. Poole, 82, beloved husband of the late Hildegard (Reimenschneider) Poole, passed away peacefully on March 10, at Masconomet Health Care Center in Topsfield. Born in Medford, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Anna Josephine (McCarthy) Poole.
Robert grew up in Hamilton and was a graduate of Hamilton High School, Class of 1949. After graduation, he attended Burdett College, but left to fight in the Korean War as a member of the United States Coast Guard. Following his service, Robert joined the Hamilton Police Department, and was appointed the first full-time patrolman position in the history of the department. In 1975, he was appointed Acting Police Chief, and held the position for 14 years. Robert enjoyed working with youth groups and umpiring Little League games. He was an instrumental part in setting up the Youth Commission and Recreation Commission. Upon his retirement, Robert loved spending winters down south and summers at home or at the “camp” in New Hampshire. Robert was a lover of golf and it led him to his job of working at the pro shop at Myopia for many years.
He is survived by his beloved friend and companion, Eleanor Washburn; four children, Barbara Fanning of Hamilton, Charles Poole and his wife, Susan, of Maryland, Michael Poole and his wife, Grita, of Pike, N.H., and Susan Ladd and her husband, Tom, of Buckfield, Maine; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Poole and her companion, Tim St. Germain, who helped greatly with Robert’s care; 11 grandchildren, Andrew, Nathan, Elizabeth, Jacob, Leland, Kristina, Nicole, Cody, Christopher, Michelle, and Alison; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Poole.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Paul, 50 Union Street, Hamilton, on Saturday, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be at the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, North Beverly, on Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Hamilton Cemetery.
