Genevieve J. "Jean" (Blaszczak) Frederick, 89

SALEM — Genevieve J. “Jean” (Blaszczak) Frederick, 89, wife of the late Stanley W. Frederick, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the Twin Oaks Care and Rehabilitation Center, Danvers. Her passing was made peaceful thanks to the staff of Hospice of the North Shore and that of the Twin Oaks facility.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helena (Pietrowicz) Blaszczak. She was a lifelong resident of Salem and resided in North Salem for 25 years before moving to Danvers four years ago and was a communicant of the St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Salem.

Jean was dedicated to her faith and family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, rug braiding and cooking.

She was employed as a seamstress and salesperson for many years at the former Empire Clothing Store in Salem.

Surviving her are one son and daughter-in-law, David and Ellen Frederick of Danvers, with whom she resided, two grandchildren, Michael Frederick of Danvers, Lindsay and her husband John Semas and one great granddaughter Audrey Semas, all of North Dighton, one sister Clara Byrne of Danvers, one brother Thaddeus “Ted” Blazak of Manchester-by-the-Sea and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Jane F. Kulas, Stanley, Felix and Boleslaus Blaszczak.

ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held Friday, February 22, 2013, from 5-8 pm at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. At the family’s request, funeral services are private.   • Emil Szmyd, 83

    Peabody MA — Emil Szmyd, 83, of Peabody, died Saturday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Theresa (Lewicki) Szmyd, who died in 2006. According to family legend, Emil’s mother, Victoria Szmyd, a native of Newmarket, N.H., gave birth to him on the steps of the U.S. Embassy in Poland on May 20, 1930. He later immigrated to the U.S. in 1950, after being raised by his grandmother while Russian and German soldiers occupied his village of Lubla, Poland, during WW II. After reuniting with his family in the U.S., Emil learned how to repair houses from his stepfather and became an electrician. He joined the IBEW Local 259 in Salem, later retiring from Local 103 in 1992. He worked all over the North Shore. He was also the vice president and an active member of the Polish Falcons Nest 188 of Salem. He enjoyed playing cards, watching birds, playing harmonica, and being with his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his children, Edward Szmyd, Richard and his wife, Catherine Szmyd and Robert and his wife, Tara Szmyd all of Peabody; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Maggiemae, Isabella, and Rose Szmyd; his sisters, Irene, Marilyn and her husband, Ron; and his cousins, Walter, Oleshia, Joe, Tadeck, Statia, and Teresa.

    Peabody MA — Nancy L. (Hall) Thraisvoulos, 80, of Peabody died peacefully Thursday evening at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was the loving wife of 56 years to retired Peabody Firefighter Theodore “Teddy” Thrasivoulos. She was born in Salem, Mass., and was the daughter of the late Elmer W. and Leola (Goodwin) Hall. Raised in Salem, she graduated from Salem High School. In 1957, she entered and won the Miss Salem beauty contest. Nancy loved to sew and take trips down to Salem Willows. She was an avid fisherwoman and enjoyed surfcasting in the waters at Plum Island and Martha’s Vineyard. She also loved to travel to Europe, and had gone to Bermuda five times on Mother’s Day. Her most enjoyment was in the raising of her two children.

  • Donald Edward Prisby, 83

    San Diego, CA — Don was born and raised in Beverly, Mass., the only child of Edith and Edward Prisby. He attended the University of Idaho, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He married the love of his life, Marie T. O'Conor of Peabody, Mass., on Mare Island in San Francisco on September 10, 1952. He proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for 27 years before retiring in 1977 when he, Marie, and their children moved to San Diego. Don was employed by the City of San Diego in Parks and Recreation, preserving open space for 14 years. He was an avid fan of the Padres and was an active parishioner of the Mission San Diego de Alcala. He spent many hours volunteering at the Franklin Elementary School, at the Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital and was a Docent on the USS Midway. He is survived by children, Kathleen Damon (Wallis) of Virginia Beach, Eileen Prisby of San Diego, Patricia Fumagalli of San Diego, Donald E. Prisby Jr. (Elizabeth) of Plymouth, Minn., Liz Andrews (Bruce) of Sunset, S.C., and Edie Lufkin of Ipswich, Mass.; and grandchildren, Christopher, Stephen, Andrew, and Caroline Damon, Anthony and Dante Fumagalli, and Michael, Matthew, and Mitchell Prisby.

Hogan and Audrey (Bernardi) Hogan of Peabody. He graduated from St. Mary’s of Lynn and Merrimack College. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he was employed as a teacher in the Middleton and Peabody school systems. Ed then owned and operated Olde Salem Contractors of Danvers for over 25 years.

    Peabody, MA — Jennie (Goulos) Andrian, 94, of Peabody, died Thursday at the Mass General Hospital, Boston after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Harry Andrian with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage. A lifelong resident of Peabody, she was the daughter of the late George and Caliope (Papuchis) Goulos and was educated in the Peabody School System. Jennie was an active member of St. Vasilios Church and belonged to the Philoptohos Society. She loved to sew and enjoyed casinos and taking trips to Foxwoods. Jennie and her husband enjoyed traveling and taking cruises but her pride and joy in her life was watching her grandson, Harris, grow into adulthood. She was also very fond of her pet pug, “Gus.” She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Chris Grevelis of Peabody; her cherished grandson, Harris Grevelis of Salem; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the sister of the late Napoleon Goulos and Frances Goulos.

He proudly served three years in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict, two of those years on the Casco-class cutter Coos Bay in the North Atlantic based out of Portland, Maine.

    Bradenton, FL — Philip Finnemore Staples died peacefully June 4, 2013, in Bradenton, Fla. He was surrounded by his children and loving wife, Stephanie, whom he spent his last 18 years with. Phil lived a fruitful life and touched many people. Born in Brockton, Mass., in 1934, he grew up in Whitman, Mass., with his late brother, Robert; mother, Inez and father, Carleton. He graduated from Whitman-Hanson High School in 1953 where he was a student athlete. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1962. After, he married the late Iona (Weisberg), with whom he shared 31 years of life, proprietors of Julie's Beef, and a home in Marblehead. He loved to coach hockey and baseball and was a dedicated Bruins fan. He was an avid boater and lifetime member of the Marblehead Yacht Club. He was a Scottish Rites 32nd degree Mason, Major and President of Sahib Oriental Band Pipes and Drums, Aide to the Potentate, York Rites and many other branches and organizations. He will be honored by the Shriners of Boston in September. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; beloved dog, Maggie; daughter, Beth and husband, Brian LaCroix; sons, Eric and Jesse; son, Geoffrey and wife, Diana; grandchildren, Derek Matthew, Megan Ashley and Nathaniel Iona.
