Byfield, MA — Paul Lawrence Getchell of Byfield, MA, died Sunday, March 16, after a lengthy illness. He was born February 3, 1940, to Merle Getchell and Harriet (Hunter) Getchell in Danvers, MA. He attended Danvers Public Schools and served in the United States Army. Paul had a long career in the automobile business, starting as a mechanic and later transitioning into a career in new auto sales. He later found his niche selling used cars. Paul Getchell Used Cars was in operation for over 25 years, opening first in Peabody, MA and later moving to Rowley, MA.
Paul was known for his infectious sense of humor, passion for reading, love for animals, and avid interest in politics and current events. He was a firearms enthusiast and enjoyed hunting and visiting with relatives in New Brunswick, Canada. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending his time with his fellow parishioners at West Congregational Church in Peabody, MA and his close friends and neighbors at Oak Ridge Apartments in Byfield, MA.
Paul is survived by his daughters, Amy Getchell of Seabrook, NH, Heidi Getchell-Bastien and her husband, Steven Bastien, of Amesbury, MA; four grandchildren, Andrea Theriault, Toni Theriault, Nora Marks, and Kyle Bastien. He is also survived by his brothers, Bruce and his wife, Carol Getchell, of Danvers, MA, and Merle (Jr.) and his wife, Rachel Getchell, of Peabody, MA; as well as numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Paul was also the former husband of the late Ann (Armstrong) Getchell. He will be dearly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Celebration of Life will be held at West Congregational Church at 27 Johnson St., Peabody, MA on Saturday, March 22, at 10 a.m. A reception will be held in the parish hall immediately following the service.
