Evelyne C. (Johnson) O'Neil, 100


Concord, N.H. — Evelyne Courtis (Johnson) O’Neil, age 100, wife of the late Archie J. O’Neil, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at the Havenwood Heritage Heights Retirement Community in Concord, N.H., three weeks shy of her 101st birthday.

Evelyne was born in Rowley to the late Irving P. and Edith A. (Courtis) Johnson, and graduated from Ipswich High School. She went on to graduate from Salem Normal School, (Salem State University), with a degree in education in 1931, and taught at the Central School in Rowley. She was a passionate and talented flower gardener, a world traveler, and a dearly beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Evelyne and Archie owned and operated Quality Fish Market for many years in Marblehead, working tirelessly together, six days a week. They loved their home on Gingerbread Hill in Marblehead and also enjoyed their summer home in Rowley.

Following their retirement, Mrs. O’Neil and her husband spent winters in Sarasota, Fla., and summers in Epsom, N.H. They traveled throughout the world, often by freighter, and enjoyed playing golf in the local area with her sister and brother-in-law. After Archie passed, Mrs. O’Neil often traveled alone or with friends, taking her last trip in her mid-eighties to the British Isles. Mrs. O’Neil was a congregant of the South Congregational Church in Concord, N.H., was a member of the Salem State Alumni Association and Past M.E.C. of the Neptune Temple of Pythian Sisters.

Evelyne is survived by her nieces and nephew, Peg Roberts of E. Hampstead, N.H., Daniel Girard of E. Charlemont, Mass., and Jean Emerson of Ipswich; her grand-nieces and nephews, Deb and Marc Hordon, Jeff and Mike Roberts, Elise Babcock, Amy Staab, Olivia and Stephen Girard, Angelique Kaber, Patricia Godfrey, Nancy Parmalo and Brett Emerson, and several great-grand-nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edith Porter, Irving and Lloyd Johnson, and Ruth Girard, and aunt of the late Judith Girard Hordon.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held at the F.S. Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 14 Independent St., Rowley, on Friday, March 22, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
