Swampscott — George C. Lyons, age 89, husband of Llewellyn (Cady) Lyons, of Swampscott, died in the Lafayette Nursing Home on Sunday, May 12, 2013.
Born in Lynn, the son of the late George A and Alice (Mack) Lyons, he was raised and educated in Swampscott, graduating from Swampscott High School in the Class of 1941. Following his graduation from high school, Mr. Lyons joined the United States Navy and flew Torpedo Bombers (TBM) for three years until being honorably discharged. He was then employed by Jordan Marsh in Peabody and Boston as a cosmetics and small appliance buyer; a position he held for 34 years. Following his retirement, he volunteered at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, enjoyed playing tennis, and had worked diligently through the Collins Foundation to restore a Torpedo bomber just like the one he flew, for demonstration in air shows. He also enjoyed a part-time job at the Sears Service Center in Peabody for 13 years, retiring in 2005.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, George N. Lyons of Swampscott; and a niece, Lee Allen of Manchester.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Tift and Jeanne Fenci; and a son, Geoffrey L. Lyons.
