Arthur N. Sotis, 88

Ipswich — Arthur N. Sotis, 88, husband of Etta (Markos) Sotis, died Friday morning, March 29, 2013, in the Kindred Hospital in Peabody, after a long illness. Born in Ipswich on March 16, 1925, he was the son of the late Arthur and Helen (Vlahos) Sotiropoulos.

Mr. Sotis was a lifelong and very active member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich, serving on the Board of Trustees for several years. He attended schools in Ipswich and was a graduate of Ipswich High School, Class of 1942. Mr. Sotis was a veteran of WW II having served in the Army. He was employed for many years as an agent for the John Hancock Insurance Company retiring in 1980. Mr. Sotis and his son Jack started The Salad Bowl restaurant in Ipswich in 1976 and operated it for 27 years. Mr. Sotis was a member and Past Master of the John T. Heard Masonic Lodge in Ipswich, he had recently received his 50-year pin from the Lodge. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post# 1093 of Ipswich. He served on the Ipswich Parks and Recreation department for several years and was the department’s Commissioner for a few terms. Mr. Sotis also served on the Ipswich Zoning Board of Appeals for several years as well. In the 1950’s and early 1960’s he started the Pan Hellenic Mandolinata Greek Orchestra and in 1968 he founded a new orchestra, The “Adelphia” of Ipswich.

Mr. Sotis is survived by, in addition to his wife of 63 years Etta of Ipswich, his children: Arthur A. and Nia Sotis, John J. (Jack) and Beth Sotis, all of Ipswich, James F. and Diana Sotis of Acton, ME. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Nicole, Alexa, Nathan, Stephanie, James Peter, Evelyn and Christina Sotis and by his great-grandchild Ava Antonia Levesque. Mr. Sotis also is survived by his sister Constance and Peter Nicholson of Ipswich and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Fotis A. Sotiropoulos, formerly of Ipswich, and by his three sisters: Theodora Kafulides, formerly of Ipswich, Patricia Young, formerly of Hooksett, NH, and Christine Sotiropoulos, also formerly of Ipswich.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 2nd, at 10 A.M. at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich. Burial with military honors will follow in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich. Visiting hours will be Monday, April 1st, from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
