Alexander Pitcairn Jr., 74


Ipswich — Alexander Pitcairn Jr., 74, longtime resident of Linebrook Road, Ipswich, died on Friday, February 28, 2014, in the Lahey Medical Center, Burlington, following a long illness.

Born on January 3, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late Alexander and Ann G. (Clark) Pitcairn. He was raised in Ipswich, and was a graduate of Viewpoint School in America, N.Y. Following his graduation, he attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, a student of engineering.

He was a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees, serving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Honorably discharged, he returned to Ipswich to raise his family. For many years, he was employed as a builder and contractor, and founded Pitcairn Construction in 1970.

He enjoyed summers spent with his family at Lake Winnipesaukee, and more recently, with his grandchildren, family and friends building his dream retirement home in New Durham, N.H.

Mr. Pitcairn was an avid deer hunter, a member of the Agawam Pistol Club and the National Rifle Association, and was a longtime member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Topsfield. He will be remembered for his patriotic values and commitment to various charities.

He is survived by two sons, David A. Pitcairn and his wife, Yvette, of Ipswich, and Douglas Banks Pitcairn of Portland, Maine; two grandchildren, Madeline and Emily Pitcairn, both of Ipswich; his former wife, Barbara E. Banks of Ipswich; two nephews; and five nieces. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann Donovan, formerly of Lynn; and his best canine friend, Cheyenne.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 8, in the Trinity Episcopal Church, Topsfield. Family and friends are cordially welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Rd., Topsfield, MA 01983.
