John H. Leary


Marblehead — John “Jack” H. Leary died December 26, 2012, at Grosvenor Park nursing home in Salem. He was the son of the late Charles and Mary Leary of Marblehead. Born in Swampscott on June 23, 1921, Jack grew up there and then made his home in Marblehead. He attended Marblehead schools through his sophomore year of high school, transferring to and graduating from Lawrence Academy. He attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor before leaving to serve as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force in World War II. He continued his service in the Air Force Reserves until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel. After World War II, Jack attended and graduated from the New England College of optometry. He was an optometrist for 40 years in Marblehead.

He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Marblehead, and a past president of Marblehead Bank. He was a life member of New England Football officials.

He leaves his companion Shirley Pierce of Marblehead, Shirley’s son, Dana Pierce (Nikale) of San Diego and their children Jack and Kate, as well as close friend F. Carlton Siegel. His sister, Frances, predeceased him.

ARRANGEMENTS: Dr. Leary’s Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 80 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead, at 10:00 A.M. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. There are no visiting hours as requested by the family. Burial in Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead.
