Beverly — Mrs. Jean A. (VanMarter) Purcell, 83, beloved wife of John J. Purcell, died Monday, April 22, 2013, at her home.
Born in Pittsfield, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Glenn L. and Catherine (Cain) VanMarter. She was raised and educated in Concord, N.H., and graduated from Northeastern University in Boston.
Mrs. Purcell had worked in the publishing industry for several different companies including the former Beverly Times where she wrote the column about her much-loved home, Ryal Side. She was awarded “Woman of the Year” by the Ryal Side Civic Association.
A long-time resident of Beverly, she was an active member of the former St. Alphonsus Church where she was the CCD Coordinator. She loved both her parish and community, always welcoming old and new friends alike into her home. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. Jean was affectionately known by many at area restaurants on the North Shore and she commonly made friends with the staff and patrons during her visits. Her fondest phrase was "Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much," which she lived each day.
In addition to her husband, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage, she is survived by three daughters, Ann Marquis and her husband, Mark of Upton, Gail Rogers and her husband, Thomas of Methuen, and Karen Powell and her husband, James of Methuen; one son, Jay Purcell and his wife, Kristin Kelley of Beverly; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Corrine Lanigan.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held at the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly location), Friday, April 26, at 11 a.m. Family and friends are encouraged, welcomed, and wanted to attend, just as they always were in Jean's life.
