Arthur Zakas, 96, beloved husband of the late Stavritsa (Diacogeorgiou) Zakas, died peacefully in his sleep while in the comforting presence of his family, on Wednesday April 4, 2012, at the Peabody Glen Nursing Center in Peabody.
Born in Kalamata, Greece, he was the son of the late Speros and Yiannoula (Kalivas) Zakas. He lived for 14 years in Greece, then came to the United States in 1930. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1940.
He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, and served from 1940 to 1945.
Mr. Zakas worked in the leather industry in Peabody and Salem, following his military service, until his retirement in 1981.
He was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody for many years. He liked working in his vegetable garden, and everybody enjoyed his homegrown vegetables.
Mr. Zakas is survived by two sons, Speros & his wife Linda Zakas of Salem, and Charles & his wife Joan Zakas of Peabody; a daughter, Jane & her husband Phillip Kritikos of Athens, Greece; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death, besides his wife and parents, by his siblings Elias Zakas, Theodore Zakas, Katherine Booras, Demetra Karavides, and Kalliope Pliakas.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 10 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 11 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 – 8 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
