Swampscott — George L. Comenos, 59, of Swampscott, Mass., passed away on October 30, 2013, from pancreatic cancer. George was born in Lynn, Mass., on January 25, 1954, to Charles and Alice Comenos. He grew up and attended public schools in Lynn, and graduated from Boston University in 1975, where he majored in developmental economics.
From a very young age, George displayed a fervent interest in fine art and antiques. He developed an encyclopedic knowledge of art and fine collectables, which gave him the ability to recognize value where others saw none. As a result, he was one of those fortunate people who was able to base a business on his passion. George operated businesses in Salem, Mass., and at Paine’s Furniture in Boston, before he opened Comenos Fine Arts on Newbury Street in Boston in the mid-1990s. George possessed a warm, caring and immensely engaging, almost larger-than-life personality, which prompted many of his family members, friends, and business associates to surround and support him to the last moment.
He is survived by his brothers, John Comenos, Philip Comenos and his wife, Cynthia; several nieces and nephews, Charles Comenos, Christina Batchelder and her husband, Christopher, Janet Comenos and C. Christopher Comenos; and two great-nieces, Alethia and Elena Batchelder.
ARRANGEMENTS: Memorial visiting hours will be held at the Campbell, Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, North Beverly, on Friday, November 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
