DANVERS — Charles B. Soucy, 81, of Newport, Vt., formerly Salem and Wenham, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Virginia D. (Poor) Soucy, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Born on Feb. 8, 1930, in Salem, he was the son of the late Joseph O. and Alberta (Voyer) Soucy. He was a 1947 graduate of Salem High School, a 1952 graduate of Babson College, and served in the U.S. Navy.
A well-known Salem businessman, Mr. Soucy was former president of C.B. Soucy Insurance Agency. Active in community affairs, he was former president of Salem Kiwanis Club and later served as district governor of Kiwanis, International. He also served as treasurer of North Bay Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was instrumental in the formation of Salem Troop 72. He also served on the boards of various other civic organizations.
Up until the time of his illness, he was an avid skier and skied at many resorts around the world. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling and golf. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five beloved children and their spouses, Deborah and Kevin Lawton of Swansea, Charles and Susan Soucy of Boxford, Paul and Cynthia Soucy of Boxford, Joan and Kevin Street of Essex, and Janet and Lee Merrill of Wenham. He cherished and is also survived by nine grandchildren, including Amy Lawton of Swansea, Michael Soucy of Boulder, Colo., Ellen Reece and her husband Cameron of Cambridge, Laura Soucy of Swampscott, Catherine and Andrew Soucy of Boxford and Melissa, Joseph, and Jacob Merrill of Wenham. He is also survived by his loving sister, Joan Garfield of Lynn. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Matthew Lawton.
