Jennie (Douramakos) Athas, 89, of Peabody, died surrounded by her family at Peabody Glen Health Care Center on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
Mrs. Athas was born in Lowell on Aug. 2, 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Irene (Phillippou) Douramakos. She was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School in 1940. She resided in Lynn for many years before returning to Peabody in 1988.
Mrs. Athas was employed for many years as a switchboard operator at the Department of Welfare in Lynn until her retirement in 1980. Jennie devoted her life to creating a home and spending time with her family, and later she was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchild. She was a member of the Greek Choir and she will be remembered by her family and friends as having a great sense of humor and a wonderful singing voice.
Mrs. Athas is survived by 2 sons, Peabody City Counselor Arthur Athas and his wife Janet Brennan of Peabody, Di Athas of Swampscott; a daughter, Irene Athas and her partner David Reiss of Lynn; her grandchildren, Emily and Sarah Brennan-Athas of Peabody, Monika Goldberg of San Francisco, CA; a great-grandson. Aleksander Goldberg of CA; a sister, Pauline Davis of Port Charlotte, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a service at 10 a.m. at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
