Peabody, MA — Mr. Eldon W. “Sonny” Turner, age 79, of Peabody, formerly of Lynn, died Friday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a lengthy illness. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Eldon and Geneva (Peart) Turner, formerly of Nova Scotia, Canada. He lived in Lynn for the greater part of his life, and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, class of 1950. He later attended North Shore Community College and Rutgers University, receiving his degree in Human Resources.
Sonny served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He spent four years on active duty and four years in the reserves. A licensed social worker, he was the director of the Ryan House on Green St, Lynn, the Center for Addictive Behaviors in Danvers in the 1980s, and the Lowell Shelter in the 1990’s, prior to his retirement. He was a friend of Bill W. for 43 years, and was a well-known advocate on the North Shore. Sonny was not a rich man, but he gave of himself to others. He will be greatly missed by the Lynn community and by his family.
He is survived by his sister; Gloria Schinn of MN, his children; Robert J. Turner of Lynn, Nancy (Turner) Bonfiglio of Peabody, James E. Turner and his spouse Peggy Muise of Peabody, David W. Turner of Peabody, Patricia L. (Turner) Logue and her husband Chris of Salem, and Justin E. Turner of Peabody; his aunt; Ruth Turner of Nova Scotia, as well as 12 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, and many friends, nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10AM in the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt 129), Lynn. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
