Salem, MA — Ms. Joan M. McGilvary of Salem died Sunday morning in a local nursing home after a brief illness.
Joan was born in Lynn, daughter of the late Joseph H. and Dorothy (Cotter) McGilvary. Joan was a graduate of St. James High School, Class of 1956 and was a lifelong resident of Salem.
Joan worked for New England Telephone and later Bell Atlantic in the Accounting Department. Joan worked for the Phone Company for 42 years and retired in 1998.
Joan had a wonderful personality and was a kind person and enjoyed people. She had a special devotion for animals, especially cats, and a very special cat Holly, that was a great friend to Joan. She was a longtime member of the North Shore Telephone Pioneers Association, a member at Liberty Council and also enjoyed traveling.
Joan leaves her devoted friends, Patricia Pentleton of Holbrook and Carol Clukey of Lehigh, Fla.; her two godsons, Matthew Pentleton of Holbrook and Mark Clukey of Oakland Park, Fla.
ARRANGEMENTS: Joan’s Funeral will be held from the Cuffe-MCGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, on Friday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Salem/Peabody line at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
