BEVERLY & OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME — Ruth D. Farrar, EdD, 70, wife of David C. Farrar, died on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Ruth H. Farrar.
Ruth was born in Freeport, N.Y., grew up in Randolph, Mass., and lived in Beverly since 1980. She graduated from Eastern Nazarene College and Hofstra University, where she received her doctorate in education. As a literacy and reading specialist, she held a variety of teaching positions in a variety of K-12 public, private and demonstration (laboratory) schools. In 1993, she assumed the role of coordinator and professor of graduate programs in Reading at Bridgewater State University. Ruth was an instrumental part of developing literacy programs for post-apartheid parts of South Africa.
In addition to her husband, David, she is survived by her five children, Kenneth Lee and Carrie Whitehead, David L. and Christine Farrar, Jonathan and Clarinda Farrar-Merripen, Daniel Farrar, and Monique and Michael Thompson; and 11 grandchildren, David, Zachary, Seamus, Alexandra, Forrester, Lee, Mandara Rose, Declan, Marielle, Louis, and Jackson. She was predeceased by her brother, Frederick.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral service will be held at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4 Ocean Street, Beverly, on Wednesday, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Rockport. There are no visiting hours.
