Janet B. Howat, 84


North Point, Fl, formerly of Beverly — Mrs. Janet B. Howat, 84, beloved wife of the late William Wallace Howat, passed away in Port Charlotte, Fla., on February 8, 2014. The senior Howats had relocated from Beverly to North Point in 2011, joining their son, William L. Howat, his wife, Valerie Hawkes-Howat, and their youngest grandson, William Warren Howat.

Janet was born on December 10, 1929, in Danvers, the daughter of the late Howard and Ellen (Jones) Beechey. A 1947 graduate of Salem High School, she went on to Bates College. She was married in 1950. Once her children had grown, Janet worked for the Perkins School for the Blind and later for the Rockport Public Schools, where she was secretary to the superintendent until her retirement in 1990.

Janet is survived by her son and his family; her son-in-law, Russell MacDonald of Salem; and her elder grandsons, Matthew and Douglas Merritt of Portland, Ore. She was predeceased by her daughter, Margaret Howat MacDonald.

ARRANGEMENTS: Memorial visiting hours will be held in the Campbell-Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, North Beverly, on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem, at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
