Robert A. Barker, 86


Wenham — Mr. Robert A. Barker, 86, died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, April 18. Born in Beverly, he was the son of the late Ralph and Rosalyn (Waite) Barker. A graduate of the Cooperative Trade School at United Shoe, he also studied advanced math classes at MIT. A machinist by trade, he worked at United Shoe, Sage Labs in Natick, and as a master machinist at Hannah Engineering, before forming his own machine shop, Dynatech Manufacturing. He held many patents for specialized tools and parts for the Lunar Rover. Mr. Barker was a longtime square dance caller and entertainer, famed for his green guitar. He was also an active Ham Radio operator, and enjoyed time spent flying. He became a licensed pilot at age 72, and logged over 300 hours in his own small plane.

He was the much-loved husband of the late Dorothy A. (Grant) Barker. He is survived by his sons, Robert R. Barker and his wife, Mary A., of Rowley, and Donald G. Barker and his, wife, Linda G. of Wenham; a foster son, Shawn Durkee of Wenham; his daughter-in-law, Ruth Barker of Charlestown; his brother, Ralph Barker of Jacksonville, Fla.; and also extended family. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his son, David Barker; and his brother, Richard Barker.
