Marblehead — Joy Peach Colter, of Marblehead, died at her home, after a brief illness, on Monday, April 7, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Gordon E. Peach Sr. and Madeline (Power). She was the wife of the late John (Jack) S. Colter. She is survived by her children, Joanne Colter McNamara and her husband, Walter McNamara of Burlington, James Colter of Marblehead, and the late Jennifer Colter; and two grandsons, Christopher and Daniel McNamara. She also leaves her dear friend, Anne Sweatt. She was the sister of the late Gordon E. Peach Jr.
Joy was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed.
She grew up in Marblehead, and was a graduate of Marblehead High School, Class of 1947, and Simmons College with a degree in nursing. She and her husband lived in Maine and New York, before settling in Topsfield, Mass., where they raised their family. From there, she lived in Kensington, Conn., and Salem, Mass., before returning to her hometown of Marblehead in 1987.
Joy worked as a registered nurse in many capacities, throughout her moves. She was a floor nurse, and taught nursing while in Maine and New York. She worked as a visiting nurse in Connecticut, and finally, in Massachusetts at the VNA of the North Shore. She also served in many volunteer activities, including the North Shore Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Congregational Church in Topsfield, Marblehead Council on Aging, and Lifebridge in Salem. Joy was very active with her Marblehead High and Simmons College reunion committees.
She and her husband enjoyed sailing the waters of New England with their family and friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 11, at 11 a.m., at the Waterside Cemetery, 294 West Shore Drive, Marblehead. Visiting hours will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead, on Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m.
