Manchester-by-the-Sea — Joseph A. Wrobel, 90, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014, in his childhood home on Bennett Street, with his family by his side. Joe, as everyone called him, was a lifelong resident of Manchester, graduating from Story High and then Northeastern University. He enlisted in the Army and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. A decorated veteran, he was a navigator on a B-17. Joe taught sciences at Somerville High School for 25 years, prior to retirement. Joe was a member of the Amaral-Bailey Post 113, Lions Club International, Manchester Club and Knights of Columbus. An avid reader, he was also a longtime volunteer at the Manchester Public Library. Joe was also an accomplished golfer and played in many town tournaments, but he mostly enjoyed time spent with his family and grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy (Spurling); two daughters, Valerie McAskill and her husband, Chip, of Beverly, and Diane Plouff and her husband, Don, of Haverhill; and his four grandchildren, Jamie and Matthew McAskill, and Kyle and Taylor Loman.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Parish, 62 School St., Manchester, on Thursday, April 24, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the Campbell-Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., North Beverly, on Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
