Ellsworth Lewis Humphrey, 95


Peabody and Marblehead — Ellsworth Lewis Humphrey, 95 of Peabody died Tuesday, January 15, 2013. He was born in Lynn on May 15, 1917 to the late Roy and Irene Humphrey.

He married Elizabeth Wood of Rockport on September 14, 1941 and enjoyed 71 years of marriage. They resided in Marblehead for many years, moving to Swampscott, Peabody, and then to Brooksby Village in Peabody in 2001. Elizabeth predeceased him on September 13, 2012. He was a World War II veteran, staying in the army reserves until retirement age. He worked for the Post Office in Marblehead for sixteen years, retiring in 1979.

He belonged to the Legion of Salem. He was also a Mason and belonged to the Philanthropic Lodge in Marblehead and Olivet in Lynn, Sutton Royal Arch in Lynn, Salem Zebulun, and Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts. He was also a long-time member of St. Michael’s Church, Marblehead. He and Elizabeth loved to travel. They enjoyed over 30 cruises and many automobile trips.

Ellsworth is survived by his two nephews, Robert C. Scribner of Rindge, N.H. and Roy Smolenski of Kauai, Hawaii. He is also survived by Elizabeth’s nieces and nephews, William G. Wood of Seabrook, N.H., Dona K. Hobin of Hutchinson Island, Fla., Timothy R. Wood of Gloucester, and Natalie J. Wood of New York City. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Smolenski.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held on Friday, January 25, at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, Marblehead. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend. There will be no visiting hours. The burial will be held at Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
