Mary K. Ruoff, 92

Danvers — Mary Madeleine Alice (Kehrig) Ruoff, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 19, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 23, 1920, in Lyons, France, Mary lived there until she was six when she, her mother, and her brother came by ship to America. She spent most of her youth between Detroit, where her mother worked and Glencoe, Ontario, where she thrived among cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mary graduated in 1940 from Highland Park Junior College, MI, and worked in advertising before joining The American Red Cross where she met her future husband, Fred A. Ruoff. They married in 1952 while stationed in Germany and later moved on to North Africa with the Red Cross before returning to the States to raise their family. Family life centered in beautiful New England towns where lasting friendships always developed. Mary and Fred were able to preserve the Ruoff family haven, a cottage on Newfound Lake, N.H., where love, laughter, and fun for family and friends is still shared today. In 1986, they retired to Longwood, Fla., where they made many friends and were active in the Church of the Resurrection. Mary and Fred enjoyed 39 years of marriage before Fred's passing in 1992. Mary remained in Florida until 2009 when she moved to Danvers to be closer to her children.

Mary was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As matriarch of her family, she was held in high esteem. She loved her family dearly, was well-loved in return, and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her children, Katie (Ruoff) Palmer and husband, Steve of Middleton, Fred Ruoff and wife, Katie of Chichester, N.H., and Ann (Ruoff) Schlecht of South Hamilton. Also surviving are grandchildren, Scott and Craig Palmer, Emily (Ruoff) Chartier and husband, Tyler, Ben Ruoff, and Alex and Andrew Schlecht; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Cora Chartier. Mary is also survived by her cousin with whom she was like a sister, Mary Katherine (Martin) Edwards Arnold. Mary was preceded in death by her brother Francis Kehrig in 2009.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2, at 2 p.m., at First Church in Wenham, followed by a celebration of Mary’s life at the Wenham Tea House. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Newfound Lake Region Association, 800 Lake Street, Bristol, NH 03222.
