Stuart, FL — Harold G. Pierce, age 89, husband of the late Julia C. (Richards) Pierce, died on January 31, 2013 in Stuart, FL.
A lifelong resident of Marblehead, he was born in Marblehead, the son of the late Alden and Elsa (Nyberg) Pierce, and he was educated in local schools. He enlisted in the Marines in 1942. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism as a demolition expert in clearing a path for the Marines to take Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. After the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross is the highest honor awarded by a branch of the service.
He was a self-employed painter in the family business, Pierce Brothers Painting for many years until retiring around 2000, to work in his garden and devote time to his carving.
He is survived by four children, Linda J. Fitzgerald, and Christine M. Slaven both of Stuart, FL, Gregory Pierce of Marblehead, MA and Michael Pierce of Beverly, MA; eight grandchildren, Erin Fitzgerald, Amy Fitzgerald Sheehan, Kara Fitzgerald Moss, Peter Fitzgerald, Patrick Slaven, Maura Slaven, Brian Pierce and Sara Pierce; ten great grandchildren, Neil Donohue, Kevin Donohue, Tommy Donohue, Julie Sheehan, Brendan Sheehan, Tim Sheehan, Daniel Moss, Nora Moss, Lila Pierce and Brandon Pierce and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Alden and Carl Pierce.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 82 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. At the family’s request there are no visiting hours. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
