Swampscott, MA — Ruth “Jean” Collins, of Swampscott, passed away at her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren on April 27, 2013. Jean was born in Lynn on January 10, 1925, to the late Ruth (Scott) Leary and the late Albert R. Leary. She graduated from Swampscott High School, Class of 1943. Jean was married to John E. Collins and enjoyed 48 years of marriage before his passing in 1994.
Jean worked as a library clerk at Swampscott High School for many years. Her retirement provided her with the time and opportunity to enjoy her precious grandchildren of whom she was so proud. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott.
Jean loved spending time with her family and friends. Always more concerned for the welfare of those around her, she seldom thought of herself, making light of her own cares. She will be remembered for her inner strength, courage, wonderful sense of humor, kind heart and generous spirit. Above all, her love will live on in all who knew her, most especially her family.
Jean is survived by her seven children, sons Michael Collins and his wife, Amy; Scott Collins and his wife, Donna Cavanaugh; Robert Collins and his wife, Miyuki; daughters Susan Surette and her husband, Robert; Sarah Wattendorf and her husband, George; Sheila Palleschi and her husband, Edward; Sharon Morretti and her husband, Nunzio. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ryan and Brendan Malloy; Ryan, Brendan, Travis, and Tyler Collins; Brian Surette and Katie Tomkiewicz; G.V. and Heidi Wattendorf and Gretchen Abel; Shane and Kerry Corcoran and E.J. Palleschi; Nunzio and Jack Morretti; and great-grandson Charlie Tomkiewicz. She was predeceased by her sisters Catherine (Betty) O’Shea and Dorothy Leary.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m., from the Solimine, Landergan & Richardson Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Rte. 1A), Lynn, followed by a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott. Interment will follow at Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
