William "Mickey" Bancroft Moore, Jr., 94

Peabody — William “Mickey’ Moore 94, of Peabody, died February 19, 2013, at the Brooksby Village Continuing Care.

Mickey was born on April 1, 1918, in Lynn, Massachusetts, last surviving of five children born to William B. Moore Sr. and Lucilla Phillips of Lynn. They later moved to Lowell Street, West Peabody where Mickey spent his childhood on the family farm.

He attended Peabody High School and the University of New Hampshire where he met his future wife, Ruth, and graduated in 1941 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Mickey served on active duty with the U.S. Army (WWII and the Korean War) and then for many years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. His career as an engineer was spent at General Electric, the Department of Defense and the Office of Naval Research, on the NASA Program, until retiring in 1978.

Mickey and Ruth travelled extensively in the United States and Europe. Always in motion until recent years, Mickey was an avid hiker, skier, camper, boater and all-around handy-man. He had a well-stocked workshop and was always ready to share his tools and expertise with anyone who asked. He enjoyed spending time at his summer home on Ossipee Lake, Freedom, NH, near his parents’ summer cottage, where the family has spent part of every summer since 1927.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth Payne, two sons; Alan, of Knoxville, TN, and Stephen of Newburyport, MA, grandsons Nathan of Neuchatel, Switzerland, Curtis of Flagstaff, AZ, and David of Berkley, CA., and two great-grandsons in Switzerland.

ARRANGEMENTS: There will be no service at this time; a family gathering to celebrate Mickey’s life will be held at the lake-side cottage during the summer.
