Kenneth M. Doig, 80, died Thursday, February 2, 2012 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Jean R. (Foster) Doig.
Born in Chelsea on June 9, 1931, he was the son of the late George P. and Margaret M. (McLennon) Doig. He had resided in Everett for many years before moving to Beverly in 1958. He was a graduate of Everett High School class of 1949, where he was a captain of the football team and was a Boston Globe All Scholastic. He was also a member of the state championship baseball team. While attending the University of New Hampshire, Ken played tackle on the last undefeated and untied 1950 football team.
Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 3, 1951 and served his country during the Korean War before being honorably discharged on September 29, 1955.
He was employed as a sales representative for Blue Cross – Blue Shield of Massachusetts for over 25 years before his retirement in the early 1980s. In retirement, he worked in the Parks Department for the City of Beverly for several years and enjoyed volunteering at the Beverly Hospital.
Ken was one of the original coaches of the Senior Division Baseball League for 15 years and had also coached Church League Basketball. He was a member of the Everett E Club and the Mt. Vernon Galilean Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Malden. He was also a 50-year member of the Second Congregational Church in Beverly, where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott P. Doig of Hampton, N.H., and Bruce M. and Janet M. (Spiridigliozzi) Doig of Beverly; four grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Kayla and Jenna-Leigh Doig, all of Beverly; four nephews, James and Paul Doig both of Leominster, George Doig of Rockland and Stephen Doig of Rockport; a niece, Susanne Mitchell of Delaware, Ohio, and a sister-in-law, Joy and her husband, William Davis of Aurora, Colo. He was also predeceased by two brothers, James P. and George M. Doig.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held Thursday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
