Barbara J. (Beal) Dupuis

Newburyport, MA — Barbara J. (Beal) Dupuis, age 88, lifelong Newburyport resident, died peacefully Thursday afternoon at Brigham Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport, with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of the late George Dupuis.

Born in Newburyport, January 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Clara (Trull) Beal and was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1942. Last year she celebrated her 70th Class Reunion by riding in a convertible with 3 of her classmates in the 2012 Yankee Homecoming Parade.

Mrs. Dupuis was a telephone operator, retiring from the Verizon office in Salisbury. During the 1950s, she was a kindergarten teacher at Mrs. Haley’s Kindergarten in Newburyport, and was referred to as “Mrs. Barbara” by all her young ones, who truly loved her.

She was an expert knitter, having made countless baby hats and blankets for the newborns at Anna Jaques Hospital via the Knitting for Newborns Group at the Newburyport Council on Aging. She was also an avid gardener, spending hours tending to her many gardens at home.

Although she received much joy and pleasure from her knitting and gardening, her greatest joy by far was spending time with her family and friends.

Her survivors include her daughter, Diane Xenelis of Newburyport; three wonderful grandchildren, Michael Xenelis of Cambridge; Katherine Xenelis and her fiance, Sharif Zeid, of Stamford, Conn., and Elizabeth Xenelis of Brookline; her former son-in-law, Harry Xenelis of Ipswich; along with several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. She was predeceased, in 1976, by her daughter, Joan Dupuis. She was also predeceased by her three older brothers, Edward, Howard and Harold Beal.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green St., Newburyport, will be Sunday, July 14, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services at the funeral home will be Monday at 10 a.m., followed by burial in Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Friends of the Council on Aging, Post Office Box 550, Newburyport, MA 01950, notated for use for the Senior Center, or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
