Dorothy L. McEwan, 90

Peabody — Ms. Dorothy L. (Folan) McEwan, age 90, of Peabody, died Saturday afternoon in a local nursing home after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of Ian McEwan.

Born in Saugus, Dorothy was the daughter of the late, Mathias and Catherine (O’Donnell) Folan. She attended Saugus schools and was a graduate of Saugus High School. She lived in Lynn for a short time and had been a resident of Peabody for the past 61 years. Prior to her retirement in 1983, she worked in the “White Room” assembling airplane components for the General Electric Co. in both the Lynn and Wilmington plants.

Dorothy and her husband were active volunteers for My Brother’s Table and were involved in the Marriage Encounter and GIFT programs. She also volunteered as a tutor for Operation Bootstrap. She had a strong faith in God and continually expanded her horizons through continuing education and even writing her own memoirs. She was an avid Scrabble player and cake decorator who enjoyed crafts, square dancing, country music and had a unique gift of yodeling. Above all, she loved her family and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she leaves her two children, Mary Ellen Doyle and her husband, Michael of Lynn and John P. McEwan and his wife, Christine of Winthrop, Maine. She was the sister of James Folan of Windham, N.H. Dorothy also leaves four grandchildren, Kelly Sabella, Shannon Hetherington, Julie Stevens and Megan McEwan; five great-grandchildren, Evan, Marissa, Ian, Rory and Anna; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Matthew Folan, Mary Amerault, Winifred Folan, Julia Elwell and Catherine Fisher.

ARRANGEMENTS: Dorothy’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Brooksby Village Chapel, 100 Brooksby Village Drive, Peabody, on Friday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. At the request of the family, visitation and burial will be private.
