Edith E. McKinnon

Syracuse, N.Y., and Peabody — Edith E. McKinnon, 90, passed away peacefully at Francis House in Syracuse, N.Y., on Wednesday, October 10, while in the comforting presence of her family.

Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth Rebecca (Hogan) McKinnon; she grew up in Peabody and graduated from St. John’s High School, Class of 1939. Edith pursued her dream of becoming a registered nurse and graduated with top honors from Beverly Hospital School of Nursing.

She enlisted in the United States Army during World War II in the Army Nurse Corps. Her career included a tour in Japan and Manila, Philippines, and at the time of her discharge she had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Upon returning to Massachusetts, Edith went on to work at A.C. Lawrence and concluded 45 years in the nursing profession at the J.F.K. Federal Government Building in Boston. She retired in 1985.

Edith was a devoted caregiver to both her parents and her brother Joe. She loved to travel, dance and spend time with family, friends and her beloved pets. She moved to the Syracuse area 22 years ago to be with family out there.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara J. McKinnon of Syracuse; her nieces, Debi and her husband Jack Rotondo, Linda McKinnon and her companion John Szczech, Edith and her husband John Verone; her nephew, Phil and his wife Judy Klein; as well as many cousins, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, besides her parents, by her brothers Joseph and Donald McKinnon.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a visitation on Monday, October 15, from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Expressions of sympathy and contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208.
