Peabody — Mr. Robert W. Smith, age 100, of Peabody, died on Saturday March 9, 2013. He was the husband of the late Elva H. Beckett, with whom he had shared 60 years of marriage.
Born in New York, New York, he was the son of the late Stanley and Katherine (Schlieben) Smith. He was raised in New York and Lynn and had lived in Peabody for the majority of his life. A graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1932, he also earned degrees in both Civil and Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University.
Until his retirement in 1977, Robert had worked as a Plant Engineer at Eastman Gelatine in Peabody for over 42 years.
He was a former 32nd degree member of the Masons, Amity Lodge A&FM, Danvers, and an avid amateur photographer. He enjoyed gardening and traveling with his wife, and was extremely generous to his family. He was a dedicated alumnus and benefactor to Northeastern University for his entire life.
He is survived by a son Thomas W. Smith and his wife Tina, of West Melbourne, Fla., a daughter Jean L. Fierro and her husband Jeffrey, of Peabody, four grandchildren Margaret Flowers and her husband Timothy, Cynthia Paraski and her husband Gary, Jennifer Yeingst and her husband Michael, and Rebecca Smith and her husband Thomas, all of New Hampshire, a sister-in-law Virginia Smith, of Boxford, as well as fifteen grandchildren, with one great-grandchild and one great-great grandchild expected this year, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Stanley, Howard, and Francis Smith.
ARRANGEMENTS: His Funeral will be held on Saturday at 11 am in the SOLIMINE LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME 426 BROADWAY (RTE129), LYNN. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Friday, 4pm-7pm.
