BEVERLY, MA — Herbert N. Schlein, beloved husband of Janet Schlein, passed away March 11, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Born in New Haven, CT in 1927 to Carl and Eva (Yaffe) Schlein, Herb grew up in Cambridge. He graduated Cambridge Latin in 1945 and entered Harvard that summer. He left Harvard to volunteer for the US Army and served in the occupation force in Japan. He returned to Harvard and graduated with the Class of 1949 and served as Secretary of the Class for many years.
After receiving his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Boston University, Herb worked for the Jimmy Fund where he did research in the area of pediatric leukemia. Herb spent most of his career as a Research Group Leader at Polaroid.
Herb and Jan moved to Beverly in 1964 where he became active in the community. He was Chairman of the Hazardous Waste Commission, member of the Beverly Democratic Committee and on the Boards of Temple B’nai Abraham in Beverly and Temple Ahavat Achim in Gloucester. He also served on the Board of Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead.
In his retirement, Herb served as a docent at the Peabody Essex Museum and volunteered at Beverly Hospital installing Life Lines.
Besides his wife of 60 years, Herb is survived by his children, Robert and Elizabeth Schlein and Marilyn and Bobby Kramer, all of Beverly. He is also survived by his grandchildren Maxine, Nathaniel, Corey and Ally.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will take place at Temple B’nai Abraham, 200 East Lothrop St., Beverly, on Wednesday, March 13th, at 11 AM. Burial will follow at the Sons of Abraham Cemetery, Cole St., Beverly. Shiva will be observed at his late residence.
