Peabody, MA — Joan A. (Shea) Salerno, 84, of Peabody, died Oct. 24, 2013, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph F. Salerno, with whom she shared 49 years of marriage, the daughter of the late Terrence V. and Agnes (Noonan) Shea, and sister of the late Leo Shea. Joan was born in Swampscott and raised in Lynn and attended St Mary’s High School, class of 1947 and had been a resident of Peabody for 54 years. She worked at Electric Mutual Liability Insurance Co. and retired from the General Electric Co.
Joan was the first caregiver to join the North Shore Alzheimer’s Partnership when it was formed and given an award as Caregiver of the Year from them. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, knitting, crocheting and watching figure skating, baseball, football, and basketball.
Joan is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Tracia and her husband, Bruce, of Haverhill; one son, Joseph “Jay” Salerno Jr. and his wife, Barbra, of Beverly; one sister, Phyllis Shea of Peabody; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from the Conway, Cahill Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody on Monday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St Ann’s Church, Lynn St., Peabody at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours are Sunday, 2-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
