Peabody — On October 23, 2013, Katherine Ziavras, beloved daughter of the late Mary and Spiros Ziavras, passed away in New York after a lengthy illness. Katherine was a kind, generous and sensitive person who will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
Family was of utmost importance to Katherine. In her earlier years she was surrounded by a large extended family, and she often recounted her joyous times with her many cousins when they visited each others' homes. There were no TVs then, nor were there many distractions, so every moment she spent with her family she considered some of the most momentous times in her life.
Katherine most enjoyed her family life in Massachusetts, sharing a two-family home with her immediate family. Her cousin Katherine Ziavras refers to Katherine as her mentor, her sister and remembers being her shadow when they lived together in Lynn, Massachusetts, while her cousin Peter Ziavras always referred to her as "Cousy." Katherine adored Peter and his rambunctious ways, always making sure there were enough goodies on hand to feed her "little brother's growing appetite."
Ahead of her time, Katherine developed a vision of a new life. She was enthralled by the prospect of living and working in New York City, so she set off to experience her dream. Katherine always had a keen sense of responsibility, so she took her mother with her to New York and cared for her until her mother passed on many years ago.
While in New York, Katherine took in all the sights and sounds of what she considered the most exciting city in the world. She went to the theatre, attended concerts, listened to lectures and worked for many years as a bookkeeper in various legal and business firms in Manhattan. She traveled to Europe and visited Greece twice, maintaining close ties with her relatives there.
